Living with a mental illness

A couple of weeks ago we had some people from NAMI (national alliance on mental illness) come and give a presentation on campus for mental illness awareness. There were NAMI members who themselves had a mental illness as well as parents of those with a mental illness there to speak to us. One woman who was telling us about her story and battles with mental illness said something that really resonated with me about “recovery”. She said ” I don’t like to think of it as recovery, because that implies you want to get back to where you were when in reality thats what you’re trying to move past, so I like to call it discovery”.
